Oliver’s Travels #10

The next day we went to Rhodes.

Rhodes is a walled city, which is a port in Greece. The walls go all the way around the city, and you can only enter where there are gates.

The roads inside the city are made of cobblestones, and most of the buildings are made of stone.

We went to a museum where they had lots of ancient pots and statues. The museum is inside a monastery which was a bit like a castle.

We also went to the palace, which was really big, with lots of wide staircases and hallways.

There was a marked walkway we had to walk on so that we didn’t walk on the mosaic parts of the floor or antique rugs. The furniture and ornaments were very expensive, some of them had gold paint on them.

When we were walking back along the road which was outside the walls, we saw some big fish swimming at the edge of the water.

There was no sand on the beaches, just small pebbles, and the water was very clear.

We went back to the ship in time for dinner.

The next day was an ‘at sea’ day.

We went to the games room and played ‘Clue’ and ‘Sorry’ board games.

We had a relaxing day and Mum did some washing which we hung out on our balcony.

We saw a beautiful sunset on the horizon of the sea. It was dark orange.

The day after that, we were back in Italy, in Sicily.

The first thing when we got ashore was to go for a ride in a carriage pulled by “Indilia” the horse. We went all around the streets of Sicily, all the cars had to give way to the horse and carriages.

We went through a huge park which had been the property of the mistress of one of the Kings. We drove past her palace which was really big and fancy.

When we were driving along the edge of one road, we almost tipped out because the road was higher in the middle, and lower at the sides.

Also, our driver pulled across in front of a tram coming along, which was really scary.

After we got off the tram, we walked into the centre of the city to a church where we sat and waited for 12 noon.

At 12 the church bells rang and then music started and different animals and people on the clock tower started dancing and moving around. There were about 12 to 15 different ‘pictures’ with things happening in time to the music. It was really clever.

The next day, there was another ‘at sea’ day while we cruised up the coast towards Venice.

I played air hockey again with our friend Gerard, and he bet me 17 to 16, the total score of all the games we played.

On the next morning, my Mum got up really early, when it was still dark, because we were coming into Venice, along one of the big canals. She told me there was another cruise ship following us in. I got up and had a look and then went back to bed.

A little bit later, we watched the sun rising over Venice.
