Oliver’s Travels #9
When we woke up the next morning, we were in Kusidasi, in Turkey. We went up to have breakfast, got lots of bottles of water to take with us, then we went ashore.
Once we were ashore a friend of Mum’s had booked a bus tour which we were going on.
First we went to Ephesus, which is the site of an ancient city. This is where some scholars think the Amazon women lived.
There were lots of cats around, living in the ruins, and our guide had a bag of cat food which he fed to them.
There was a temple and statue of Artemis, the goddess of hunting.
There were lots of ruins of temples and houses. There were some mosaic floors that were still colourful and unbroken. Only the cats had special VIP tickets for walking on the mosaic floors.
There was also the ruins of a three storey library which looked like it had been an impressive building.
We also went up into an amphitheatre/arena, which was very big, with lots of tiers of seating, and a sort of stage at one end.
The day was boiling hot and I got tired and grumpy.
Then we got back on the bus and we went to get some lunch. We had some Turkish food in a little restaurant, and I liked it.
Then we went to a place where they make real Turkish rugs.
The man who was our guide showed us lots of things, like the silk worms, and how to get the silk off the worms’ chrysalis. Then how the girls used the thread to weave a rug.
They were teaching young girls how to do the traditional weaving, because there are hardly any people around any more that know how to do it well.
I bought myself a little pure cotton rug which looks and feels like silk, but didn’t cost so much. The man gave it to me at a really good price.
Then the bus took us to a place where they make clothes and bags out of very good leather, but everything was too expensive for us to buy.
The bus then dropped us back near the ship, at a souvenir shopping area.
We couldn’t walk two steps without someone trying to sell us anything.
I bought myself a toy cat that purred, and it came with it’s own cat bed. We also got a Mother of Pearl chess board, and Mum got a genie lamp.
Then we went back to the ship, and went to bed early because we were really tired.
The next place the ship visited was Mikonos, which is a fishing town in Greece.
We went ashore on a shuttle boat, the water was really clear, even though it was a port.
The houses were all white and blue, and they were all close together so that the walkways between them are really narrow. They were like a maze, and it was really easy to get lost.
While we were there, a man walked past with a pet pelican which was really big!
There were some big old fashioned windmills that were really tall.
We got some more miniatures for my collection, and I got a Greek fisherman’s hat and a toy Pelican. We also got some things for Daddy’s chessboard.
They had the best tasting lemon gelato that we had found anywhere.
We went back to the ship by the shuttle boat.
Then on board we went to the arcade, and I had an air hockey competition with a man we had made friends with on the ship.
